Hazel Virginia Albanese, 100, died Friday, November 24, 2017 at Anthem Senior Living in Anthem, Arizona. She was born May 24, 1917 in Shadyside, Ohio, a daughter of the late Julius and Fossie Johnson of Lafferty, Ohio.
Like so many women of her generation, Hazel was, foremost and by choice, a homemaker and mother – the most important and difficult job in the world. Throughout her life, she was there for her husband, children and grandchildren with support, guidance and help in dealing with life’s challenges. She was the “sun” of her family “solar system” – providing not only warmth and strength but life itself.
Her heart was linked irrevocably to the changing seasons and birdsong of Ohio’s rolling hills. A summer evening on the porch with a cup of coffee and a dear neighbor by her side was pure contentment. Hazel loved writing poetry, searching for antiques, and shopping for a great bargain at the mall. She remained active, interested in art and current events. She continued to display the special attitude, charm, strength, and style that won her love and admiration until her final day.
In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Albanese, Sr.; her daughter Lynn Garnet Albanese; and four siblings: Milton Johnson, Jeanette Smith, Ada Dale, and Garnet McCormick.
She is survived by a son, Ernest Jr. (Mary Ann) of Barnesville, Ohio; a daughter, Cynthia (Frank) Peroni of New River, Arizona; two grandchildren: Rob (Jennifer) Blaney of San Francisco and Shannon (Peter) Stambersky of Los Angeles; great-grandson, Peter Joseph Stambersky; sister-in-law, Esther Hayden of Oradell, New Jersey; Nephews James Hayden and Sam “Bud” Harris; Nieces Emily Harris, Jane Rothwell and Mary Esther Brown.
In keeping with Hazel’s wishes, graveside services will be held in the spring at Union Cemetery in St. Clairsville, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be made in Hazel’s name to Tri-County Help Center (St. Clairsville, Ohio) or Special Olympics Ohio by going to www.TMCFunding.com.
