Joseph “Banjo” Vitiello 82, of Shadyside, Ohio passed away Thursday September 16, 2021 at W.V.U. Wheeling Hospital, Wheeling, WV.
He was born May 6, 1939 in Benwood, WV. Son of the late Sylvester and Anna (Aprea) Vitiello.
Joe worked as a pipe fitter and millwright for Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel beginning at the Benwood Plant and retiring from Martins Ferry after 33 years.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Mary Ann Fonner; a brother Guilard “Guy” Vitiello ; as well as a step son, John P. Harvath Jr. Joe loved his family and was a loving husband to his beloved wife of 33 years Janet (Cochran) Vitiello.
Also survived by 1 daughter Carla (Franco) Tommasetti of Orlando, FL, 2 sons, Joseph Mercer and John Vitiello both of Moundsville, WV.
Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Shadyside Ohio. He was a hard worker and could fix anything. He loved playing cards, going to flea markets and his garden. Survived by his dog Darcie.
Survivors include a stepdaughter Lisa (Glen) Knox, stepson, Jeff (Joan) Harvath of Wheeling, WV, sisters Rosetta (Joe) Tweedlie and Sarah Appenzeller both of Benwood, WV; as well as 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Due to Covid face masks and social distancing will be required.
Family and friends will be received at the Bauknecht- Altmeyer Funeral Homes & Crematory 441, 37th street Bellaire, Ohio 43906 on Monday September 20, 2021 from 10 am until time of Mass at 12 pm. Mass will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church in Bellaire, Ohio with Fr. Daniel Heusel officiating.
Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling, WV. Memorial contributions benefit Catholic Charities 18th Street, Wheeling WV. 26003 at TMCFunding.com.

My heartfelt condolences to your family. Your father was a good friend of my father, Al Beecher. My father always spoke highly of Joe. Before my dad passed, he asked your father to check on me when he was gone. And Joe did. That’s the kind of person he was. God Bless your family.

Sorry for your loss. I worked with Joe at Martins Ferry in the early 90’s. I still have very fond memories of him and the gang there! Prayers!!
