Niralee (Nira) Reed Howell, 86 of Shadyside, Ohio died on Sunday, September 6 at the Country Club Retirement Campus in Bellaire, Ohio. She was born on September 8, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Sidney D. Reed and Lorena Swchall Reed of Woodsfield, Ohio. Nira was a graduate of Woodsfield High School and attended Ohio University.

She was employed  by The Ohio State University Research Foundation in Columbus, Ohio and by the US Government in Aberdeen, Maryland. Nira was an employee of the Belmont Community (City) Hospital for 30 plus years. She also worked as a realtor for Century 21 Real Estate in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Nira was an active member of the Shadyside Area Chamber of Commerce where she served as a board member for many years. Nira was an active member of the Lincoln Avenue United Methodist Church and served as the Treasurer for a number of years. She was also a member of the Shadyside Order of Eastern Stars.

Nira is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, John R. Howell, her daughter, Kimberly (Dave) Lenz, her grandson, Michael (Krista) Lenz, granddaughter, Amanda Lenz and great granddaughter, Lorileigh A. Lenz all of Shadyside and by her brother, William Reed of Columbus, Ohio. Nira was preceded in death by her brothers, 3 year old James Sidney Reed and Joseph William Reed (Woodsfield, Ohio). Also by her sisters, Virginia Reed (Delaware, Ohio), Edith Griffith, Carrie Kindall, Helen Sechrest, Hazel Ferris, Bernice Krietzman (all of Columbus, Ohio), Geneva Adams (Moorsville, NC) and Mary Salisbury (Woodsfield, Ohio).

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes & Crematory 3900 Central Avenue Shadyside, Ohio and Wednesday at the Lincoln Avenue United Methodist Church 3838 Lincoln Avenue Shadyside, Ohio from 12 Noon until time of services a 1 pm with Rev. Don Perks officiating.

Interment in the Belmont County Memorial Park in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

John, Kim and family, I was so sad to hear of Nira’s passing. She was a beautiful person, and I so enjoyed chatting with her on their trips to Woodsfield and on the phone when we did the article about her childhood. She will be greatly missed by many. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Our sincerest condolences for your loss. Nira was a sweet woman who always had a kind word and a nice smile. She would always make a point to come out on the porch to say hello. Our mom loved her and they traded recipes all the time.
